Geuzenveld and neighbouring Slotermeer together form the northern part of Nieuw-West, between the Haarlemmerweg and the Sloterplas. From 1990 to 2010 they even formed their own district, Geuzenveld-Slotermeer. You will not find the area in the travel guides, but it is one of the places in Amsterdam where you still really get space.
Geuzenveld was built between 1953 and 1959 as one of the Westelijke Tuinsteden (Western Garden Cities), in six neighbourhoods each designed by a different architect. Big names such as Willem Dudok, Willem van Tijen and Jaap Bakema designed homes here, and there was plenty of experimenting with new building methods, such as ready-made wall panels hoisted into place on the building site. In 1955 the first residents received their keys.
The streets are named after the sixteenth-century geuzen (the Dutch rebels), twentieth-century statesmen and architects. The heart of the area is the Lambertus Zijlplein, named after the sculptor Lambertus Zijl.
You can still clearly see the original layout: low-rise with small gardens on the edges, walk-up and gallery flats around the shopping centre. From 1996 onwards a large part of the area was renewed. Flats were refurbished or replaced, and striking new buildings were added, such as the Parkrand building by MVRDV, eleven storeys high on the edge of the Eendrachtspark. Names such as the Dudokbuurt, the Bakemabuurt and the Van Tijenbuurt are reminders of the designers.
Geuzenveld is one of the more affordable parts of Amsterdam. Here you get more square metres, and often a garden or a spacious balcony, for a budget that would buy you a small flat in the city centre.
For your shopping you go to the Lambertus Zijlplein, or a little further to Plein '40-'45 in Slotermeer. From Tuesday to Saturday that is where you find the largest market in Nieuw-West, with some 150 stalls full of vegetables, fruit, fish, herbs and fabrics.
From here you are quickly out in the green. The Eendrachtspark lies between Geuzenveld and Slotermeer, and on the west side the Tuinen van West begin: more than 700 hectares of polder with farms, an orchard and walking and cycling routes.
Tram 13 has its terminus on the Lambertus Zijlplein and runs into the city via Bos en Lommer. Tram 7 runs through Slotermeer, along the Burgemeester De Vlugtlaan and past Plein '40-'45, towards the Leidseplein. Sloterdijk station, with trains and metro, is within cycling distance.
By car you are on the A10 ring road or the A5 within a few minutes, and Schiphol is close by too.
Geuzenveld is an area for people who find space more important than a canal address: young families who are outgrowing their flat in the city, first-time buyers finding their first home here, and older people who want to live on one level with greenery on their doorstep. It is a mixed area with many cultures, quieter than the city centre and still within cycling distance of the Westerpark.
Would you rather be in the middle of the nightlife, with cafés and restaurants under your window? Then Oud-West or De Pijp suits you better.
