Where a hundred years ago cows still grazed in the Baarsjespolder, you now hear a different language on almost every street corner of De Baarsjes. The area was built from scratch between 1920 and 1940 as part of Plan West and grew into one of the most diverse and densely populated neighbourhoods of Amsterdam: compactly built, full of development, with the Mercatorplein as its beating heart.

The name comes from a vanished hamlet in the Baarsjespolder, which was annexed by Amsterdam in 1921 and built up between 1920 and 1940 as part of Plan West. The Mercatorplein, designed entirely by Berlage between 1925 and 1927, is the only square in Amsterdam that still stands completely in its original form. The surrounding streets are named after admirals, explorers and cartographers.
Since the merger with Oud-West, Bos en Lommer and Westerpark in 2010, De Baarsjes has been part of the West district. The area is known for its diversity, with a large Surinamese community and more and more young families and creative entrepreneurs who give the streets their lively character.
Living in De Baarsjes: homes and price level
The housing consists largely of 1920s and 1930s walk-up flats in Amsterdam School style, with ground-floor homes with a small garden and upper-floor homes with a balcony or roof terrace. You will hardly find a detached house with a garden here; the area is densely and urbanly built.
Prices in De Baarsjes have risen quickly in recent years, but the area is still considered somewhat more affordable than the Jordaan or De Pijp. That is exactly why it is one of the fastest-rising areas in the city.

The Jan Evertsenstraat is the main shopping street of the area, from vintage clothing shops to contemporary design stores, complemented by the Kinkerstraat and the Postjesweg just across the border. Around the Mercatorplein you will find the neighbourhood's regular bars and cafés, such as Bar Baarsch, Café Zurich and Café Thuys, where the terrace fills up quickly on a sunny afternoon.
On the west side, the area borders directly on the Rembrandtpark, one of the largest parks in Amsterdam, with water, play areas and plenty of room for a run. If you would rather walk a bit further, the Vondelpark is close by.

Trams 7, 13 and 17 run via the Hoofdweg and the Mercatorplein directly to the city centre, Sloterdijk or the Zuidas. Postjesweg metro station, on lines 50 and 51, is in the middle of the area itself and takes you to Amsterdam Centraal or Amsterdam Zuid in a few stops.
By bike you are on the Overtoom or at the Vondelpark in no time, and by car you are on the A10 ring road within a few minutes.
Who is De Baarsjes right for
De Baarsjes mainly attracts young professionals, creative entrepreneurs and a growing number of young families who find the bustle and diversity of the area appealing. Internationals also quickly feel at home here, among the many languages and cuisines of the Jan Evertsenstraat.
Looking for a stately canal house or the complete peace of a green suburb? Then the Jordaan or Amstelveen is a better fit. But if you want to live in the middle of a lively, fast-changing neighbourhood with a park around the corner, De Baarsjes is just right.
