For a long time, Noord was simply "the other side" for most Amsterdammers: the area across the IJ where people worked, not lived. Those days are definitely over. In recent years Noord has changed at a rapid pace from an industrial area into one of the best-loved parts of the city, with the NDSM wharf as the beating heart of that turnaround.
For decades Noord was a shipbuilding and industrial area, with the NDSM wharf once one of the largest shipyards in the world. When the yard went bankrupt in 1984, an abandoned site was left for years. Since the turn of the century, artists, festivals and bars and restaurants have taken over the sheds, and the NDSM wharf has grown into one of the most creative places in Amsterdam, with the old shipbuilding cranes still its landmark.
That mix of raw industry and new energy characterises the whole area: besides the NDSM wharf there are also old working-class neighbourhoods and brand-new residential areas, all under the same name, Noord.
The housing in Noord is remarkably varied. In garden villages such as Tuindorp Oostzaan and the Vogelbuurt, built in the 1930s for shipyard workers, there are low workers' cottages with their own gardens. Around the NDSM wharf and in Overhoeks and Buiksloterham, on the other hand, modern apartment complexes are rising on former industrial land.
Noord has traditionally been one of the more affordable areas of Amsterdam, but prices are rising faster here than anywhere else in the city. If you buy now, you still benefit from just a bit more space for your money than on the other side of the IJ.
The Van der Pekstraat is the cosiest shopping street in Noord, with small, independent shops and cafés in former workers' cottages. On the NDSM wharf itself you will find places such as Noorderlicht and Pllek, with a beach on the IJ and covered terraces in old ship sheds.
Further along, at Overhoeks, the EYE Film Museum and the A'DAM Tower, with its swing at eighty metres high, draw visitors from all over the city. For some peace there is the Noorderpark, with Café Pompet by the water.
From Amsterdam Centraal you cross to Noord on the free ferry in a few minutes, day and night and with hardly any waiting time. Since 2018 you can also take the Noord/Zuidlijn: metro 52 starts at Noord station and also stops at Noorderpark along the way.
The area is great for cycling, and by car you are quickly on the A10 ring road and the A8 towards Zaandam, although it can be busy around the ferry landings at rush hour.
Around the NDSM wharf and in Overhoeks you mainly find young professionals, creatives and internationals who love the raw, international atmosphere. In the garden villages and in Buikslotermeer, on the other hand, there are many families, drawn by the space, the gardens and the greenery.
Looking for the bustle and canals of the centre? Then Noord is a less obvious choice. But if you are looking for space, a garden and an area on the move, without leaving the city, this is a good fit.
