When Amsterdam outgrew itself at the end of the nineteenth century, the marshy land south of the canal belt was transformed into an elegant new residential area with wide avenues, stately buildings and spacious public gardens. In 1864, banker and philanthropist Christiaan van Eeghen took the initiative for the Vondelpark, laid out for the well-to-do Amsterdammer of the time and still the green heart of the area.
Around the Museumplein, the cultural highlights of the city stand together: the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum and the Concertgebouw. That combination of culture, space and nineteenth-century allure makes Oud-Zuid unique in Amsterdam.
Living in Oud-Zuid: homes and price level
The area consists largely of pre-war townhouses and spacious apartments with high ceilings, graceful ornaments and interconnecting rooms (en suite), complemented by the wider avenues in Amsterdam School style around the Apollolaan and Stadionweg. Many buildings are listed and have been carefully restored.
Oud-Zuid is one of the most expensive areas of Amsterdam. If you buy here, you pay for the location, the space and the stately appearance, and you often need to act fast as soon as something beautiful comes onto the market.

The PC Hooftstraat is the exclusive shopping heart of Amsterdam, with international names such as Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Hermès, alongside the Van Baerlestraat and the Cornelis Schuytstraat for fashion, art and good food. At Christie's on the corner, the art auctions simply carry on as always.
For culture you need go no further than the Museumplein: a concert in the Concertgebouw, an exhibition at the Stedelijk, or simply a sandwich on the grass in front of the Rijksmuseum. The Vondelpark is around the corner for a run or an afternoon in the sun.
Getting around from Oud-Zuid
Trams 2, 3, 5 and 12 stop at the Museumplein and the Van Baerlestraat and take you straight into the centre. Amsterdam Zuid station is on the edge of the area, with metro lines 50, 51 and 52 and international trains towards Schiphol and the rest of Europe.
The area is compact and easy to cycle, and by car you are on the A10 ring road via the Zuidas in no time.

Oud-Zuid mainly attracts wealthy buyers and internationals: the embassies, the international schools nearby and the stately buildings suit anyone looking for space, allure and peace close to the centre. People who have lived in Amsterdam all their lives and are now ready for more living space also quickly feel at home here.
Looking instead for a compact apartment on a tighter budget? Then De Pijp or the Rivierenbuurt is a better fit, where you still live in the middle of the city for less money.
