At home in Amsterdam-West

Four neighbourhoods, one district.

Amsterdam-West is not a single neighbourhood but a district, with four neighbourhoods that each have their own face: Oud-West, De Baarsjes, Westerpark and Bos en Lommer. Since 2010 they have formed one district together, and it is the most densely populated in Amsterdam. Cycle from the city centre to the ring road and you see the city grow here layer by layer.

The character of West

The character of West

The character of West is easiest to read from the years in which it was built. Close to the centre are the neighbourhoods from around 1900, such as the Staatsliedenbuurt around the Van Limburg Stirumplein, still a stronghold of the squatters' movement in the 1980s. Then come the brick blocks of De Baarsjes from the 1920s and 1930s.

Right on the edge is Bos en Lommer, in the 1930s the first neighbourhood built according to the General Extension Plan: long, straight rows of homes, facing the sun, with greenery and water in between. What all the neighbourhoods share: densely built, many cultures side by side and always busy.

Living in West: homes and price level

Living in West: homes and price level

In West you almost always live in an apartment. In the oldest neighbourhoods these are flats in divided buildings from around 1900, often with a steep staircase. In De Baarsjes and Bos en Lommer you will find walk-up flats from the interwar period, with a little more light and often an extra bedroom. New builds are mainly on the edges, such as in the Houthavens.

The price level varies considerably by neighbourhood. Oud-West is one of the more expensive parts of the city, while De Baarsjes and Bos en Lommer are somewhat lower on average. That means you can shift around in West: a few streets further can mean a very different price tag.

Shopping streets, markets and parks

Shopping streets, markets and parks

Every neighbourhood in West has its own shopping street: the Kinkerstraat in Oud-West, the Jan Evertsenstraat in De Baarsjes, the Spaarndammerstraat in Westerpark and the renewed Bos en Lommerplein, with shops around a market square. For fresh vegetables and fish you go to the Ten Katemarkt.

There is more greenery than you would expect in such a dense district. The Erasmuspark with its pond, the Rembrandtpark on the west side and the Westerpark are all just a few minutes' cycle from each other.

Getting around from West

Getting around from West

Metro 50 and 51 stop at Postjesweg and Jan van Galenstraat and take you without changing to Sloterdijk or Amsterdam Zuid. Sloterdijk station, just outside the north-western edge of West, has trains to places including Schiphol, Haarlem and Zaandam. Trams 7, 13 and 17 run right through West.

The A10 ring road runs along the western edge, so by car you are quickly on the motorway. Most residents simply take the bike, though: from the Bos en Lommerplein you are in the city centre within a quarter of an hour.

Who is West right for

Who is West right for

West suits first-time buyers and young couples who want to keep living in the city without canal-belt prices. Thanks to the mix of neighbourhoods, you can also move up here: from a compact flat in Oud-West to a more spacious walk-up flat in Bos en Lommer, without losing your regular café or gym. That is why more and more families are staying in West, with public gardens such as the Frederik Hendrikplantsoen around the corner.

Looking for a single-family home with its own garden? Those are scarce here, so Nieuw-West or Amstelveen is a better place to look.
