At home in Oud-West

Nineteenth-century, bustling, and never quiet.

Nowhere in Amsterdam do you hear so many languages mixed together as on the Kinkerstraat. At the end of the nineteenth century, Oud-West grew into a true working-class neighbourhood along the Overtoom and the Kinkerstraat, with the Kinkerbuurt in the north and the Overtoombuurt in the south. After years of urban renewal, it is now one of the best-loved areas of the city: densely populated, mixed and always on the move.

The character of Oud-West

The character of Oud-West

The area owes its name to the nineteenth-century extension just outside the old city boundary, with the Kinkerstraat as its main artery, named after the Amsterdam poet and lawyer Johannes Kinker. In the 1980s the area was thoroughly renovated, after which the working-class neighbourhood gradually changed into the mixed, colourful area it is today, with more than 170 nationalities side by side.

The clearest proof of that change is De Hallen: a former tram depot from the beginning of the twentieth century, built in the Amsterdam School style. After the GVB left in 1996, the building stood empty for years, until it reopened in 2014 as a cultural centre with a cinema, a hotel and the Foodhallen.

Living in Oud-West: homes and price level

The housing consists largely of narrow buildings from around 1900, once built for working-class families and later divided into smaller flats. Expect compact apartments, often an upper-floor home with a balcony or roof terrace, rather than spacious single-family homes.

Because of its popularity and its location close to the Vondelpark and the centre, Oud-West is one of the more expensive areas of Amsterdam. Homes that come onto the market at the right price are often sold again quickly.

Shopping, eating and relaxing

The Kinkerstraat is the area's shopping street, with a wide mix of businesses that reflects the diversity of the neighbourhood. At the Ten Katemarkt you buy fresh vegetables, fish and fabrics, while De Hallen brings together the Foodhallen, a cinema and several terraces.

The Jan Pieter Heijestraat and the Bilderdijkstraat also have their own mix of cafés, specialist shops and local stores. For a quiet walk or a drink on a sunny terrace, you never have to go far in Oud-West.

Getting around from Oud-West

Trams 7 and 17 run right along the Kinkerstraat and take you to Centraal Station or the Leidseplein in a few minutes. Along the Overtoom, the area's other main artery, tram 1 runs towards the centre and Amsterdam Zuid.

The area is compact and great for cycling, and by car you are on the A10 ring road in no time. If you prefer public transport, you never have to walk far to a stop.
