Westerpark simply owes its name to the park itself: laid out in 1845 as Amsterdam's first municipal park, and extended decades later by city architect Van Niftrik for the working-class neighbourhood that grew up around it. That same neighbourhood is now one of the most popular in the city, with the old Westergasfabriek as its beating heart and the Spaarndammerbuurt as a surprising architectural gem.
Next to the park itself, the Imperial Continental Gas Association built the Westergasfabriek in 1885, which supplied gas for the city's street lighting until 1967. After it closed, the complex stood empty for years.
From the 1990s onwards, the old factory halls were converted into the Westergasterrein: now a lively site with bars and restaurants, festivals and culture, in the middle of the greenery. That mix of industrial past and new life characterises the whole area.
The housing consists largely of compact workers' homes from around 1900, spread over narrow streets in the Spaarndammerbuurt and the Zeeheldenbuurt. Expect mainly smaller apartments, from studios to three-room homes, sometimes with a finely crafted Amsterdam School facade.
In the Houthavens, on the edge of the area, more spacious new-build apartments have been added in recent years. Because of that mix of old and new, the price level is just a bit more accessible than in the canal belt, although prices here are also rising steadily with its popularity.
The Westergasterrein is the place to be for a bite and a drink, with places such as Pacific Parc and Cantine de Caron in the old factory halls and terraces that are full all year round. For daily shopping and a pleasant stroll, the Spaarndammerstraat is the neighbourhood's regular shopping street.
The Westerpark itself is the green heart: the regular spot for a morning run, an afternoon on the grass or one of the many summer festivals.
Tram 5 has its terminus at the Van Hallstraat stop, close to the entrance of the Westergasterrein, and takes you via the centre and the Museumplein all the way to Amstelveen. Buses 21 and 22 also serve the area.
Sloterdijk station, with trains and metro lines 50 and 51, is within cycling distance. By car you are quickly on the A10 ring road, and Schiphol is close by too.
Westerpark mainly attracts first-time buyers, young professionals and creatives who love a neighbourhood with character, close to the greenery and the centre. The compact homes in the Spaarndammerbuurt and Zeeheldenbuurt are ideal for one- or two-person households.
Looking for a spacious family home with a garden? Then Nieuw-West is a better place to look. But if you love a lively neighbourhood with a park around the corner, this is exactly right.

Westerpark was originally a working-class neighbourhood and you can still see that in the prices: because the homes are compact, the entry level is just a bit more accessible than in, say, the canal belt or De Pijp. The area has become very popular in recent years, though, so prices are rising steadily.
